Brazilian Coconut Kisses (Beijinhos de Coco)

Brazilian Coconut Kisses, or Beijinhos de Coco, are small, sweet coconut confections made from sweetened condensed milk, coconut flakes, softened butter, and vanilla, then rolled and dredged in coconut flakes. These chewy, creamy treats are traditionally topped with a clove for decoration. They offer a rich, milky sweetness with a pronounced coconut flavor, making them popular at parties or as small desserts.

Description

Brazilian Coconut Kisses are prepared by cooking together sweetened condensed milk, butter, and coconut flakes until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the pan. This forms a sticky, dough-like base which, once cooled, is rolled by hand into small balls. Each ball is then coated in additional coconut flakes, lending texture and enhancing the coconut taste. Optionally, a whole clove can be placed on top of each kiss for traditional flair, though it is for decoration and removed before eating.

The final confection has a chewy, fudgy texture with a smooth coconut flavor. They are often served in paper bonbon cups, making them easy to handle at gatherings. The recipe is simple, requiring minimal ingredients and no baking, relying on stovetop cooking to achieve the right consistency.

Storage options include keeping them at room temperature in an airtight container for a couple of days, refrigerating to extend freshness up to four days, or freezing individually on a baking sheet before transferring to a container to preserve for up to two months. Thaw frozen kisses in the refrigerator before serving.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk 14-ounce or 396 g
  • 1 cup sweetened coconut flakes plus more for dredging
  • ½ tablespoon butter softened (plus more for greasing a plate and your hands, unsalted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional, pure
  • clove optional, for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Mix the condensed milk, coconut flakes, and butter together.
  2. Cook in a medium non-stick saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture starts to show the bottom of the pan when you scrape it with your wood spoon (about 5-8 minutes).
  3. When coconut kisses 'dough' is ready, remove from the heat, mix in the vanilla extract, and spread the mixture onto a greased plate.
  4. Let cool to room temperature before starting to roll them into balls with greased hands. Use a ½ Tablespoon as measurement. Then, dredge gently in the coconut flakes until totally covered.
  5. Place into paper bonbon cups. Stick a clove atop (center) of each coconut kiss if desired. The clove is only for decoration and must be removed right before eating!!!

Notes

  • Store coconut kisses in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze individually on a parchment-lined baking sheet for at least 2 hours before transferring to a freezer bag for storage up to 2 months.
  • Thaw frozen kisses in the refrigerator before dredging in coconut flakes and serving.
  • To infuse a subtle clove aroma, store the candies with whole cloves but remove cloves before eating.
