Butter Tarts
Description
Butter Tarts combine a buttery, flaky crust with a rich filling made from brown sugar, egg, melted butter, white vinegar, vanilla, and golden raisins. The filling is poured into tart shells or dough rounds placed in a muffin pan, then baked at a moderate temperature until set yet still slightly gooey inside. The brown sugar provides sweetness and moisture, while the vinegar offers a mild tang to counterbalance the sugary filling. Golden raisins add a chewy texture and gentle fruity notes throughout.
The texture contrast between the crisp tart shell and the soft, luscious filling is key to this dessert. The baking time ensures the filling firms up but remains tender. Butter tarts are typically served at room temperature, allowing the flavors to meld and the filling to hold its shape when handled.
These tarts work well as small handheld desserts for gatherings or as a comforting treat paired with tea or coffee. Their size and richness make them easy to enjoy in moderation. Variations often swap raisins for chopped pecans or other nuts.
For storage, keep butter tarts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days or freeze wrapped in plastic wrap for up to three months. Thaw at room temperature before serving to maintain texture and flavor.
