Instructions

  1. Place the cast-iron pan on a hot campfire grate. Add onions, peppers, oil and Italian seasoning. Toss the veggies to incorporate the seasoning.
  2. Add the brats to the pan.  Cook until the veggies are softened and beginning to blacken and the brats are cooked through. For pre-cooked brats: Cook until the brats are heated through. For uncooked brats: Cook until the brats reach the internal temperature indicated on their packaging.
  3. Toast hot dog buns on indirect heat on the campfire grate, or push the veggies and sausages to the edge of the pan and toast the buns in the pan.
  4. Serve on toasted buns with mustard, or skip the buns for a lower-carb meal.

Notes

  • Serves 4, or 2 hungry campers.
  • Pre-Cooked or Uncooked Brats?  For camping, pre-cooked sausages are much easier to deal with.  If using uncooked sausages, make sure to bring a meat thermometer.  Cook sausages to the internal temperature indicated on the packaging.
  • Meat + Meatless Options: This recipe works well with any variety of bratwurst or bratwurst-style sausage.  I like the vegan brats from Beyond Meat.  If you prefer chicken sausages, we like the apple chicken sausages from Trader Joe’s or the Never Any! brand apple chicken sausages from Aldi.
  • Nutrition information assumes the use of chicken bratwurst and does not include buns or mustard.
