Camping Hot Dogs Recipe

This Camping Hot Dogs recipe features hot dogs roasted over an open flame and topped with caramelized onions and condiments in a warm bun. The slow-cooked onions add sweetness and depth, while toasting the buns over the fire provides extra flavor and texture. The technique suits outdoor meal preparation and communal eating.

Description

The recipe begins by slowly caramelizing thinly sliced onions in butter over medium to low heat until soft and golden. Hot dogs are cooked on roasting sticks near an open flame, rotated regularly to warm through evenly and develop a slight char if desired. Buns can also be toasted over the fire by placing them over the heat, ideally with a double roasting stick for stability. Once assembled, the buns are topped with caramelized onions, condiments like ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise, and the cooked hot dogs.

The caramelized onions provide a rich, sweet contrast to the salty hot dogs. Roasting over fire imparts smoky notes and a crisp exterior. Toasted buns offer a sturdy base and enhanced flavor, making this a satisfying outdoor meal.

This recipe is convenient for camping or fire-side cooking where simple ingredients and tools allow a tasty and comforting meal shared with others. Condiments can be adjusted to personal taste.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 large onion sliced thin
  • 4 hotdog
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • ketchup to taste
  • mayonnaise
  • mustard

Instructions

  1. Start by caramelizing the onions. Melt the butter in a medium-sized pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 3 minutes and then lower the heat to low and cook for 10 more minutes.
  2. While the onions are cooking start the hot dogs. Spear the hot dogs on your roasting sticks. Hold them close to but not directly in the flames. Rotate them a quarter turn about every minute or so. They will take about 7-10 minutes to warm through. If you want them a little more charred on the outside hold them in the flame at the very end.
  3. If you want to warm your bun, lay it over your hot dog and toast it over the fire - this works best if you have a double roasting stick.
  4. Top your hot dog buns with caramelized onions and all the condiments you want then put a hot dog on top and dig in!
