Chile de Arbol Salsa

Chile de Arbol Salsa is a spicy blend made by toasting chiles de árbol with onion and garlic, then blending them with canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, and salt. The salsa is smooth with visible chile specks, offering a hot and smoky accompaniment for tacos, tostadas, or as a dip.

Description

This salsa features chiles de árbol toasted in canola oil until they darken and develop a fried texture. Onion and garlic are then fried briefly with the chiles before blending into a smooth sauce with peeled whole tomatoes and tomato sauce. The salsa is salted to taste and served at room temperature or chilled, capturing the deep, smoky heat of the toasted chiles balanced by the mild sweetness and acidity of the tomato base.

Its smooth texture with bits of chile visible makes it suitable for dipping or topping Mexican dishes such as tacos and tostadas.

For less heat, increasing the tomato sauce reduces spiciness. The salsa keeps for 3 to 5 days refrigerated and freezes well for longer storage.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 teaspoon canola oil
  • 20 chiles de árbol stemmed (do not remove seeds or veins)
  • 1 onion quartered, small, white
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 cup peeled whole tomatoes canned
  • 1 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Heat canola oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add chiles and toast for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring constantly so chiles are fried well and change color.
  2. Add onion and garlic and fry for 2 minutes, again stirring constantly.
  3. Transfer fried ingredients to a food processor or blender and add whole tomatoes, tomato sauce, and salt. Puree until salsa is smooth with specks of chiles. Add salt to taste.
  4. Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled.
  5. Serve as a salsa dip or to top off your favorite tacos or tostadas.

Notes

  • Add more tomato sauce to reduce spiciness if desired.
  • Serve this salsa as a dip or to top tacos and tostadas.
  • Refrigerate for 3 to 5 days or freeze to store for several weeks.
