Chocolate and Banana Puff Pastry Pinwheels

Report
Chocolate and Banana Puff Pastry Pinwheels combine flaky puff pastry with a spread of chocolate and mashed banana rolled into a log, sliced, and baked into individual portions. The baking process creates golden, browned edges with a warm, sweet filling of banana and chocolate. Brushing the pinwheels with egg wash before baking gives a shiny finish. These pinwheels are best served warm and can include optional cinnamon sugar for extra flavor.

Description

This dessert features puff pastry rolled out and spread evenly with chocolate spread, topped with mashed banana. The layered pastry is rolled into a log, then sliced into 12 pinwheels arranged on a baking sheet. Each pinwheel is brushed with beaten egg to promote browning and a glossy surface as they bake at 190°C/375°F for approximately 20 minutes. The result is a crisp, flaky pastry with a soft, sweet banana and chocolate center. The recipe allows for substitutions, using raspberries instead of banana or adding a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar before baking to enhance flavor. Cooling the pinwheels is advised before serving due to the hot filling, though they are delicious when still warm.

Notes

  • Nutritional values vary if you substitute homemade Nutella with store-bought or reduced sugar chocolate spreads.
  • Raspberries can be used as an alternative filling to banana for a different flavor.
  • Sprinkling cinnamon sugar on top before baking adds a complementary sweet spice note.
  • Arrange slices with sufficient space on the baking tray as the pinwheels will expand while baking.
  • Allow pinwheels to cool briefly after baking since the banana and chocolate filling can retain significant heat.
  • Serving the pinwheels warm enhances their flavor and texture, though not necessary to wait until fully cooled.
