Chocolate de Maní [Recipe + Video] Dominican Peanut 'Cocoa'

This warm, thick, creamy, flavorful chocolate de maní (roasted peanut 'cocoa') was a popular weekend breakfast tradition in my family, and very much worth trying.

Ingredients

Servings
  • cup peanuts unsalted, toasted
  • 2 quarts milk 2 lt, skim
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar or to taste
  • 2 cinnamon stick
  • 6 cloves
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg optional, freshly-grated

Instructions

1. Blending

  1. Blend the roasted peanuts with the milk and half of the sugar. This may take some time; we don't want it to have a grainy texture. I ran the blender for 3 minutes at full speed, cleaned the sides with a spatula, and blended for two more minutes. You may have to blend more or less depending on your blender.Add all other ingredients and sugar to taste. Pour into a saucepan.

2. Heating

  1. Boil for 10 minutes over low heat.Remove the cinnamon sticks and cloves.

3. Serving

  1. Serve hot, and sprinkle the nutmeg on top.

Notes

  • Use almond, soy or rice milk for a vegan version.
  • You may use sweetener of your choice in place of sugar.
