Chocolate Hummus

Chocolate hummus blends black beans with cocoa powder and almond butter to create a creamy and smooth spread. Its subtly sweet and chocolaty flavor works well as a healthy dessert dip or snack. This recipe uses coconut sugar and vanilla extract to enhance the taste while maintaining a silky texture that can be adjusted by adding water or maple syrup. It’s a unique spin on traditional hummus with a rich, velvety consistency.

Description

Chocolate Hummus combines canned black beans with cocoa powder, coconut sugar, almond butter, vanilla extract, and a touch of salt. The mixture is processed until smooth and glossy, producing a creamy texture that resembles traditional hummus but with a chocolate twist. It can be thinned or sweetened by adjusting the water or maple syrup added during blending. The base of black beans adds a mild earthiness, complementing the deep cacao notes and nutty almond butter.

The method involves pureeing the ingredients until fully blended and smooth, ensuring no bean chunks remain. Chilling it in the refrigerator further firms the texture, making it ideal for dipping fruit or spreading on toast. This protein-rich treat offers a satisfying alternative snack with a balance of sweet and savory flavors, built on nutritious staples.

The hummus keeps well in an airtight container refrigerated for up to five days, allowing for make-ahead preparation or storing leftovers. This makes it a versatile option to include in various snacking or dessert moments. Adjust sweetness or thickness as preferred to suit different tastes or uses.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 (15 oz.) can black beans , drained and rinsed
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder or cacao
  • 3/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/4 cup almond butter (or nut butter of choice)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt fine sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons water (or maple syrup)

Instructions

  1. In the bowl of a large food processor fitted with an "S" blade, add in the black beans, cacao powder, sugar, almond butter, vanilla, and salt. Process until smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides of the machine, as needed.
  2. Next, add 2 tablespoons of water (or use maple syrup for a sweeter flavor), and blend again, until the mixture looks glossy. It should have a smooth, whipped consistency. You can add more water as needed, or adjust the flavor from here.
  3. Serve the chocolate hummus right away, or store it in the fridge to chill, where it will thicken up further. This can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
