Cinnamon Stewed Apples
Description
This recipe stews diced apples with lemon juice, maple syrup, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and a bit of water over low heat. The slow simmering softens the apples evenly, melding the natural fruit sweetness with the warm spice of cinnamon and the mellow sweetness from the syrup and sugar. The lemon juice provides a touch of acidity to brighten the flavors and prevent browning.
The stewed apples have a tender texture suited to spooning over breakfast items, desserts, or as a warm side dish. The cinnamon flavor can be adjusted or substituted with nutmeg or ground ginger, alone or combined for variation.
The cooked apples pair well with crunchy toppings such as crushed pecans or a drizzle of caramel sauce to enhance texture and sweetness. They can also be made with a mixture of apples and pears for different fruit notes.
To keep the apples from drying out during cooking, additional water may be added if needed. Using a cinnamon stick instead of ground cinnamon offers a more subtle spice that can be removed before serving. Adding vanilla extract or vanilla paste is another option to enrich the flavor.
