Crispy Shrimp Tacos Recipe

Crispy Shrimp Tacos feature shrimp seasoned with cumin, onion and garlic powders, chili powder, and salt, cooked quickly in avocado oil. The seasoned shrimp are enclosed in tortillas sprinkled with Tex-Mex shredded cheese and thinly sliced cabbage, then baked to crisp the tortillas and melt the cheese. Optional toppings like pickled red onion, sour cream, cilantro, shrimp sauce, and guacamole add layers of flavor and freshness.

Description

This Crispy Shrimp Tacos recipe begins by coating shrimp with a blend of spices including cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, and salt, then cooking them in avocado oil until just done. The shrimp’s seasoning delivers warmth and mild heat.

Tortillas are brushed with avocado oil, topped with cheese, cooked shrimp, and sliced cabbage before folding over and baking at high temperature. This method crisps the tortillas and melts the cheese for a satisfying texture contrast with the shrimp’s tenderness. Flipping halfway ensures even crisping.

Serving immediately is recommended to keep the tacos crisp. Additional garnishes such as pickled red onion, sour cream, cilantro, shrimp sauce, or guacamole can be added to customize flavor and add freshness.

Ingredients

Servings

The shrimp

  • 1 lb Shrimp chopped
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil

The crispy tacos

  • 8 inch tortillas
  • 3 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 12 ounces shredded cheese blend Tex-Mex
  • ½ cup cabbage thinly sliced
  • guacamole optional for serving
  • Pickled red onion
  • sour cream
  • cilantro
  • shrimp taco sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Add the chopped shrimp to a medium-sized bowl and mix with the spices.
  2. Heat the oil in a large, non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Wrap the tortillas in a cloth (or parchment paper) and warm them in the microwave for 30 seconds.
  4. Brush the oil over a large sheet pan. Put the tortillas on top, turning them over a few times so that they are lightly coated in the oil. Use two sheet pans, if needed.
  5. Assemble the tortillas by sprinkling some cheese on one half of each tortilla, top with the shrimp and some shredded cabbage and then finish with the remaining cheese. (Letting some of the cheese escape around the tortillas makes wonderfully cheesy tacos.) Fold each tortilla in half and press them down a little to create the tacos.
  6. Bake the tacos for 10 minutes and then flip the tacos over and bake for another 10 minutes. Let the tacos cool for a few minutes - they will get crispier as they cool. Serve the tacos with all of your favorite taco toppings!
