Easy Baklava Recipe

Easy Baklava is a layered pastry dessert made with phyllo dough, finely chopped walnuts, cinnamon, and a sweet honey lemon syrup. The recipe involves brushing multiple sheets of buttered phyllo dough and layering them evenly with the spiced walnut mixture before baking. Once baked, the honey and lemon syrup is poured over the warm pastry, soaking through the layers and creating a rich, sweet finish. This baklava offers a combination of crisp, flaky textures and a moist, nutty interior.

Description

The Easy Baklava Recipe features sheets of delicate phyllo dough layered with a mixture of finely chopped walnuts and ground cinnamon. Each layer of phyllo is brushed generously with melted unsalted butter to ensure crispiness and golden color on baking. After assembling multiple layers, the baklava is baked until crisp and flaky. The honey, sugar, water, and fresh lemon juice syrup, cooked briefly and allowed to cool, is poured over the hot baked baklava to seep into the pastry, adding sweetness and moisture.

The texture of this baklava balances the crispy, flaky phyllo exterior with the crunchy yet tender walnut filling, accented by warming cinnamon flavor. The syrup's lemon juice adds a subtle freshness to the rich honeyed sweetness, preventing the dessert from becoming overly heavy.

Baklava is traditionally served cut into diamond or square shapes once fully cooled. It is often enjoyed as a dessert or alongside tea or coffee. The generous butter layers allow for a satisfying crisp crust, contrasting the soft nutty interior.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup honey pure
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice fresh
  • 16 ounce phyllo dough thawed, package
  • 1 cup butter 2-sticks melted, unsalted
  • 4 cups walnuts finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Open the phyllo pastry dough package and cover with a damp towel to prevent drying out. If needed, trim the dough to fit your glass baking dish.
  2. Grease a 13 x 9-inch or larger glass baking dish with 1 tablespoon of the melted butter and set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, honey, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring often until the sugar is dissolved. Reduce the heat to low and simmer without stirring for 4 minutes; set aside to cool.
  4. Preheat oven to 325F degrees.
  5. Combine the finely chopped walnuts and cinnamon in a medium bowl.
  6. Lay 1 sheet of the phyllo dough into the bottom of the buttered dish. Brush with melted butter, then repeat with 9 more sheets of phyllo. Spread ¾ cup of the walnut mixture evenly over the phyllo layer.
  7. Lay another 5 sheets of phyllo dough over top of the walnut mixture, brushing each with butter. Sprinkle on another ¾ cup of the walnut mixture.
  8. Repeat until walnut mixture is used up, then top with 10 last sheets of phyllo dough, brushing butter on each as you add them.
  9. Brush the top layer with butter, then slice the pastry into 1 1/2 inch strips and then slice diagonally in both directions to create diamonds.
  10. Bake uncovered for 1 hour 25 minutes until pastry is golden brown.
  11. Immediately after removing from the oven, pour the cooled syrup over the pastry.
  12. Let cool completely before serving. For best results, let the baklava sit covered overnight to soak up the syrup.
