Easy Caramel Apple Galette

This Easy Caramel Apple Galette combines tender, caramelized apple filling with a rustic, golden pie crust folded around the edges. The mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon in the filling creates a warm, sweet flavor, while the flaky pie crust provides a satisfying contrast. It can be served warm or at room temperature, making it a straightforward fruit dessert with a crisp edge and tender center.

Description

The recipe begins with a rolled pie crust lining a greased pie plate to cradle a cooked filling of chopped apples, butter, brown sugar, water, and cinnamon. The apples are gently cooked until tender and the sauce thickens, infusing the fruit with caramel and spice notes. The galette's edges are folded inward, enclosing the filling partially, and brushed with milk to encourage browning.

Baking at 350°F until the crust turns golden yields a crisp, flaky exterior while keeping the fruit soft. Serving suggestions include dusting with powdered sugar or pairing with vanilla ice cream to complement the warm spiced apples and buttery crust.

To keep the crust from becoming soggy, some techniques include sprinkling breadcrumbs, applying an egg wash, or using apricot jam before adding the filling. Leftovers can be stored at room temperature for a few days or refrigerated for up to six days, and the galette freezes well for up to three months.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ingle pie crust store bought or homemade
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • cups apple chopped; about 5 medium-large
  • 6-8 tablespoons brown sugar packed
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

EXTRAS

  • 1-2 tablespoons powdered sugar aka icing sugar
  • vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350F (180C). Grease and flour a 7 or 8 inch pie plate.
  2. In a large pan or pot add the butter and melt. Add the chopped apples, brown sugar and water, gently mix to combine. Cook on medium heat, stirring often until the apples are tender, when the sauce starts to thicken gently stir in the cinnamon and continue to cook until the sauce has thickened, approximately 15 minutes to cook and thicken the sauce.
  3. Roll out the dough and fit into the pan, prick the bottom well with a fork, pour in the apple mixture and gently cover with the extra dough that hangs over the pan.
  4. Brush the dough with a little milk and bake until the crust is golden, approximately 25-30 minutes. Let cool or serve warm. Serve with a scoop of ice cream or dust with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • To prevent soggy crust, try sprinkling bread crumbs or brushing an egg wash or apricot jam before adding filling.
  • Store leftovers covered at room temperature for 2-3 days or refrigerated tightly wrapped for 5-6 days.
  • Freeze fully cooled galette wrapped well; keep up to 3 months, thaw in fridge before reheating.
  • Use Brown Sugar Pie Crust or Italian Pie Crust for variation; avoid puff pastry as it may not seal properly during baking.
