Easy Donut Holes

Easy Donut Holes are small fried dough pieces seasoned with nutmeg and rolled in sugar after frying. They have a light, tender interior and a golden, crisp exterior from frying in hot oil and are quick to make using common ingredients.

Description

The recipe combines all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg with wet ingredients of egg, milk, and melted butter to form a batter. Nutmeg adds a warm spice note complementing the sweetness. Small portions of dough are deep-fried at a precise temperature until golden and cooked through, resulting in donut holes with a lightly crisp exterior and soft inside.

After frying, the holes are drained to remove excess oil then rolled in sugar to add a sweet, grainy coating enhancing texture and flavor.

These donut holes serve well fresh as a snack or dessert and are relatively simple to produce in batch with a deep pot or fryer.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk whole
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted, unsalted
  • neutral cooking oil for deep-frying, generic cooking oil
  • 1/4 cup sugar for rolling

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground nutmeg. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and butter. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix well.
  2. In a pot or deep skillet, heat the oil to 375°F (190°C). Using a small round ice cream scoop, drop the dough into the oil, five or six pieces at a time. Fry until browned, about 1 to 2 minutes, turning once.
  3. Drain on paper towels, then roll the warm doughnut holes in sugar. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Maintain the oil temperature at 375°F (190°C) for consistent frying results.
  • Fry donut holes in small batches of 5-6 pieces to avoid crowding and ensure even cooking.
  • Turn fried donut holes only once during cooking, about 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  • Drain fried donut holes on paper towels before rolling in sugar for less greasy texture.
