Easy German Apple Cake Recipe - Apfelkuchen

Easy German Apple Cake, or Apfelkuchen, is a moist buttery cake topped with thinly sliced apples sprinkled with cinnamon and brown sugar. This cake balances a soft, creamy batter with tender, slightly spiced apples on top, offering a gentle sweetness and a subtle spice note. It’s a suitable choice for a comforting dessert or coffee-time treat.

Description

Apfelkuchen blends a creamy butter and sugar base with eggs, flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt to create a smooth cake batter. The topping of thinly sliced apples arranged on the batter before baking gives the cake a moist texture and fresh fruit flavor. Sprinkling cinnamon and brown sugar over the apples adds warmth and caramelization during baking, enhancing the flavor profile.

The cake bakes to a golden exterior with a tender crumb inside. Testing with a knife ensures it is fully cooked. The recipe allows peeling apples or leaving the skin on for added texture.

Traditionally served in slices, this cake suits afternoon gatherings or dessert after a simple meal. Using sour apples can cut some sweetness and add a pleasant tartness. Baking in a lined springform pan helps easy removal and presentation.

Be sure to slice the apples evenly and spread the batter smoothly for an even bake. Checking doneness near the end of the baking time helps avoid under- or overbaking.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4.2 ounces butter soft
  • 4.2 ounces powdered sugar
  • 3 egg
  • pinch salt
  • 2 Teaspoon baking powder
  • 7 ounces all-purpose flour
  • 3 apple medium to large sized
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ Teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Place the soft butter into a mixing bowl with the sugar. Mix and whisk the butter-sugar into a creamy consistency.
  2. Add the Eggs to the mix and blend smooth.
  3. Now add in the Salt and baking powder. Besides that throw in some of the flour. Start to blend the mixture and continue to add in the flour, step by step, until you have used up everything.
  4. Mix the whole content to a smooth batter.
  5. Peel your apples, cut into slices.
  6. Heat up your oven to 180 Celsius/ 350 Fahrenheit.
  7. Prepare a springform with a layer of baking paper at the bottom.
  8. Pour the batter into the mold and spread evenly.
  9. Arrange your apple slices on top.
  10. Sprinkle the cinnamon and brown sugar over the apple slices.
  11. Bake the cake for about 38 minutes or until the cake is golden on the outside and baked on the inside. Test if it's done by going into the cake with a knife. If the knife comes back clean, it's baked through.

Notes

  • Sour apples can be used to reduce the cake's sweetness.
  • Apple skin may be left on for extra texture; just slice thinly.
