Easy Ghee
Description
Easy Ghee begins with high-quality unsalted butter, ideally organic and grass-fed for improved flavor. The butter is melted over medium heat and foam that forms on the surface is skimmed off. Then the heat is lowered to allow the butter to simmer gently until the milk solids settle to the bottom and the top becomes clear, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Care must be taken to avoid burning the solids in the pan, as this can negatively affect the taste.
After cooling briefly, the clarified butter is poured through a fine-mesh strainer into a heatproof container, leaving behind the solids. This results in pure ghee, which has a golden color and nutty aroma. Because ghee is free of milk solids and water, it has a long shelf life and a high smoke point, offering versatility for various cooking methods including frying and sautéing that require higher heat.
Store ghee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three months, or refrigerate to extend its shelf life to about a year. Using ghee can enrich dishes with a distinctive flavor and it keeps well without refrigeration if sealed properly.
Ingredients
- 1 Pound butter unsalted
Instructions
- Start by selecting high-quality unsalted butter. Aim for organic, grass-fed butter if possible, as this will result in the best flavor.
- Place the butter in a saucepan and set the heat to medium. Allow the butter to melt completely, stirring occasionally to ensure it doesn't stick to the pan.
- Once the butter has melted, you will notice a layer of foam forming on top. Skim this foam off with a spoon and discard it.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the butter simmer until the solids begin to settle at the bottom of the pan and the top becomes clear. This should take about 10-15 minutes. Be careful not to burn the solids, as this will affect the flavor of the ghee.
- Once the solids have settled, turn off the heat and allow the ghee to cool for a few minutes. Then, carefully pour the ghee through a fine-mesh strainer into a heatproof glass jar. Discard the solids left in the strainer.
- Your homemade ghee is now ready to use! Store it in an airtight container in the pantry or refrigerator, and use it in place of other cooking oils. Enjoy its rich, nutty flavor in a variety of dishes.
