Edamame Recipe

This simple edamame recipe involves boiling frozen pods briefly and seasoning them with kosher salt for a lightly salted, tender snack. The edamame pods can be served whole and eaten by shelling the beans manually, making them a healthy finger food or appetizer with mild, fresh flavor.

Description

The Edamame Recipe is straightforward: frozen edamame pods are thawed, then boiled in water for about three minutes until tender but still firm. After draining, the pods are tossed with kosher salt to evenly coat. The salt enhances the natural slightly sweet and grassy flavor of the edamame beans inside the pods.

To eat, one can peel the pods by hand or squeeze the beans directly into the mouth. This method keeps the edamame intact as a snack or appetizer. The dish is a popular, light plant-based option served warm or at room temperature.

For easier eating, trimming about half an inch off both ends of the pods before cooking can facilitate shelling. Preparation and seasoning remain simple, focusing on the freshness of the vegetable.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 12 oz. (350g) edamame frozen
  • water for boiling
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Thaw the frozen edamame at room temperature.
  2. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Drop the edamame into the water and boil for about 3 minutes. Drain the water.
  3. Transfer the edamame to a large bowl, add the kosher salt, and toss a few times until the salt is evenly distributed. Serve immediately.
  4. To eat edamame, you can peel the pod open with your hands and pick out the edamame beans. Alternatively, you can use your fingers to squeeze the pods and push the edamame beans directly into your mouth.

Notes

  • Cut off about half an inch from both ends of the edamame pods with kitchen scissors before cooking to make them easier to eat.
