Egg Roll in a Bowl

Egg Roll in a Bowl is a stovetop dish delivering the flavors of classic egg rolls without the wrapper. Ground pork, garlic, and ginger are cooked until browned, then combined with shredded cabbage and carrots for a tender yet slightly crisp texture. The mixture is seasoned with soy sauce and rice vinegar, and served with a tangy, sweet fish sauce-based drizzle and optional garnishes like green onion and wonton chips for added crunch.

Description

The Egg Roll in a Bowl recipe begins by creating a savory sauce combining water, rice vinegar, fish sauce, garlic, sugar, salt, and crushed red pepper to set the flavor profile. Ground pork is cooked in toasted sesame oil with minced garlic and fresh ginger until halfway browned, then further seasoned with soy sauce, black pepper, and sugar. Shredded cabbage and carrots are folded in and cooked briefly to remain tender but retain bite. A splash of rice vinegar brightens the mixture before serving.

Presented over white rice, the dish is topped with chopped green onion and optional garnishes like cilantro and wonton chips, adding fresh and crunchy textures. The accompanying sauce allows individual customization of tanginess and saltiness. This recipe offers the essence of egg roll filling with less oil and effort, suitable for a quick and flavorful meal.

Ingredients

Servings

Sauce

  • cups water
  • ¼ cup rice vinegar
  • tablespoon fish sauce
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 large garlic minced, clove
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt Morton brand
  • 1 pinch crushed red pepper (Use more if you like heat!)

Egg Roll Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil toasted
  • 1 pound ground pork bulk
  • 3 large garlic minced, cloves
  • ¼ cup fresh ginger peeled and minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 5 cups green cabbage Or use a 14-ounce bag of pre-shredded coleslaw mix instead, shredded
  • 1 cup carrot Pre-shredded carrots works great!, shredded
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 3 green onion chopped
  • cilantro optional garnish, chopped fresh cilantro leaves
  • wonton chips optional garnish, chopped fresh cilantro leaves

Instructions

  1. Sauce: In a small saucepan over medium to medium-high heat, stir together all sauce ingredients. Once sugar and salt have dissolved, remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
  2. Egg Roll Mixture: Heat a large skillet with tall sides over medium heat. Once hot, add sesame oil and let it warm for about 1 minute. Add pork, breaking it up with a wooden spoon or spatula. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring and breaking up occasionally, until pork is about half-way browned.
  3. Add garlic, ginger, soy sauce, black pepper, and sugar to the pork, and stir to combine. After pork is thoroughly browned, fold in cabbage and carrots. Cook, stirring occasionally, until cabbage and carrots are softened but still a bit crunchy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Sprinkle rice vinegar over the top of the egg roll mixture and fold one last time.
  4. Serve: Spoon the hot mixture over white rice. Top with green onion, cilantro, and wonton chips. Offer prepared sauce on the side, for individuals to drizzle over the top.
