German Walnut Shortbread Cookies

German Walnut Shortbread Cookies feature a buttery dough blended with powdered sugar, vanilla, flour, and coarsely chopped walnuts. After chilling the logs of dough, slices are cut, dipped in sugar, and baked until lightly browned. These cookies deliver a crisp, rich texture with a nutty flavor from the walnuts and a sweet sugar coating, making them a traditional treat suitable for coffee or tea accompaniments.

Description

This recipe for German Walnut Shortbread Cookies begins by creaming cold unsalted butter with powdered sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Flour and salt are blended in gently, then sugar and chopped walnuts are mixed just until combined. Forming the dough into logs and refrigerating allows the butter to harden for cleaner slicing.

Slicing the chilled dough into half-inch rounds and dipping them in granulated sugar before baking creates a sweet, slightly crunchy exterior. Baking at 350°F for 10-12 minutes yields cookies with a crisp shortbread texture and a rich walnut flavor. The combination of butter and walnuts defines the buttery, nutty characteristic of these traditional cookies.

These shortbread cookies pair well with hot beverages and serve as a classic accompanying treat for gatherings or a snack. The dough benefits from adequate chilling to maintain shape and facilitate cutting, ensuring uniform cookies with a pleasant texture.
