Guava Hats in Syrup
Description
In Guava Hats in Syrup, ripe guavas are carefully peeled to preserve the fruit’s pulp, halved, and de-seeded. These guava halves are boiled until tender and then simmered in a syrup made by reducing guava cooking water with sugar and a pinch of salt, plus a cinnamon stick for aroma and subtle spice.
The syrup thickens enough to coat the soft guava pieces, melding the fruit’s natural sweetness with added sugar and warm cinnamon notes. Cooking is gentle to preserve shape and texture, resulting in tender guava 'helmets' infused with syrup.
This dish can be served as a lightly sweetened, fruit-based dessert or accompaniment once cooled slightly. The combination of guava’s tropical flavor and cinnamon-spiked syrup brings a fragrant and subtly sweet finish.
Ingredients
- 1 lb guava ripe
- 1 liter water
- 1 cup sugar
- cinnamon
Instructions
- Start off by peeling the ripe guava fruit, careful not to remove too much of the outer pulp. Slice the fruit in half and scoop out the pulpy seeds inside and discard them. Now you have your little "helmets" ready.
- Wash your guava helmets thoroughly and place them in a deep pot with enough water to cover them. Bring the pot to a boil and then simmer until they soften.
- Prepare the syrup by mixing 200 ml/ about 1 cup of the water the guavas have boiled in and simmer in a separate pot with the sugar and a pinch of salt until it thickens slightly into a syrup.
- Add the guavas to the pan and simmer with the syrup until you get a good consistency.
- Once done, set aside and allow to cool slightly before serving.
- Enjoy!
