Homemade Chocolate Pudding

This Homemade Chocolate Pudding uses cocoa powder, sugar, cornstarch, and whole milk to create a creamy, dense dessert cooked on the stove until thickened. Butter and vanilla provide richness and smoothness, resulting in a silky texture with a balanced chocolate flavor. The pudding is chilled to let it set firmly, making it suitable for serving in individual bowls, either plain or garnished.

Description

The recipe starts by whisking together sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt in a saucepan, then mixing in part of the milk to create a smooth base. The mixture is heated over medium-low heat until it begins to thicken and steam. Gradually adding the rest of the milk and bringing it to a boil ensures full cooking of the starches for proper setting.

Once the pudding is thick and creamy, butter and vanilla extract are stirred in to enrich the texture and deepen flavor. Cooling it to remove steam prevents skin formation, and covering the surface with plastic wrap helps maintain smoothness during chilling. The pudding sets in the fridge for at least two hours, developing a firm but soft consistency.

This pudding serves as a classic chocolate dessert suitable on its own or as a component in layered desserts. The preparation yields slightly over half a cup per serving, making it convenient for portion control. Garnishes can be added at serving to complement the chocolate base.
