Homemade Oreo Cookies

These Homemade Oreo Cookies recreate the classic sandwich cookie using devil's food cake mix for a rich chocolate base paired with a creamy cream cheese frosting filling. The cookies have a soft yet slightly crumbly texture from the cake mix and are baked just until set to avoid dryness. The filling blends cream cheese and butter with powdered sugar to create a smooth, lightly tangy frosting that complements the chocolate cookies. These are ideal for freezing ahead or enjoying fresh, offering a sweet treat with a homemade twist.

Description

Homemade Oreo Cookies use devil's food cake mix combined with shortening, eggs, and vanilla to form a moist, chocolatey cookie dough. Rolled into small balls, these cookies bake quickly to a soft texture that differs from typical crispy cookies, capturing a cake-like consistency. The filling is a cream cheese frosting made by creaming softened cream cheese and butter, then mixing in powdered sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form. After the cookies cool, they are sandwiched with the creamy filling, creating a familiar layered cookie. The recipe suggests chilling or freezing the cookies before serving to enhance their texture.

The result balances the rich cocoa flavor of the cake mix with the tangy sweetness of the cream cheese filling, providing a standout homemade version of a well-known treat. The softness of the cookies and smoothness of the filling make these suitable for gifting or enjoying as a luxurious snack. Extra cocoa can be added for deeper chocolate flavor if desired.

Storing the cookies frozen also helps maintain their texture and makes them easy to serve on demand. This recipe can be adapted by using homemade chocolate cake mix if devil's food cake mix is unavailable, ensuring flexibility in preparation.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Cookies:

  • 2 boxes devil's food cake mix
  • ¾ cup shortening
  • 4 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

For the Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350-degrees.Sift the cake mix into a large mixing bowl or stand mixer with a paddle attachment. Add shortening, eggs, and vanilla.
  2. Mix the batter until just combined.
  3. Roll dough into walnut sized balls and place onto a greased cookie sheet.
  4. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Do not overbake. Leave cookies on the baking sheet for at least 5 minutes after removing from oven. Allow to cool completely before adding the filling.

For the Filling

  1. Mix cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Add powdered sugar in a little bit at a time. Once the powdered sugar is incorporated, add the vanilla. The filling should form fairly stiff peaks.
  2. After the cookies have cooled completely, spread filling over the bottom of one cookie and place another cookie on top with the bottom touching the filling. We like to freeze the cookies before we eat them, but you can eat them right away as well.

Notes

  • For a richer chocolate flavor, add 1-2 teaspoons of cocoa powder to the cake mix before baking.
  • If you don't have devil's food cake mix, you can make a homemade chocolate cake mix and use 7 cups of that mix total for this recipe.
  • These cookies can be frozen after assembling for easier storage and to help firm up the filling before eating.
