Homemade Teriyaki Sauce
Description
The sauce starts by combining soy sauce, honey, orange or pineapple juice, minced garlic, and mirin in a saucepan. It is brought to a boil and then simmered over medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes with frequent stirring, reducing the liquid and concentrating the flavors. The resultant sauce is glossy and slightly syrupy with a harmonious blend of salty, sweet, and tangy notes from the soy, honey, and citrus juice respectively.
The optional addition of cornstarch before boiling allows the sauce to thicken more quickly and attain a smoother, more viscous texture suitable for coating grilled or stir-fried dishes. Once cooked, the sauce can be used immediately or cooled and stored refrigerated for up to five days.
Ingredients
- ⅔ cup soy sauce low sodium
- ½ cup honey
- ½ cup orange juice or pineapple juice
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tbsp mirin
- 1 tbsp cornstarch optional
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients to a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat then reduce the heat to medium and let it reduce for around 8 to 10 minutes until it’s thickened to your liking, stirring frequently.
- Use immediately or allow the sauce to cool before storing in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Notes
- Mix cornstarch into the sauce before boiling to reduce simmering time and achieve a thicker consistency.
- Store cooled sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Use freshly minced garlic for optimal flavor.
