Homemade Tortillas
Description
This Homemade Tortillas recipe uses all-purpose flour, warm water, baking powder, fine sea salt, and olive oil to create a soft, pliable dough. After kneading until smooth and letting it rest, the dough is portioned and rolled into thin, roughly circular shapes. Cooking the tortillas on a dry skillet at medium heat causes them to puff lightly, indicating doneness and creating tender layers. The result is soft, flexible tortillas well suited for wraps, tacos, or accompaniment to main dishes.
Handling the dough with a rolling pin on parchment paper helps achieve even thickness, and resting the dough portions allows gluten to relax for easier rolling. Storing the cooked tortillas wrapped in a clean towel helps keep them moist and ready to serve.
Ingredients
- 225 g all-purpose flour
- 125 ml water warm
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt fine sea salt
- 25 ml olive oil or vegetable oil
Instructions
- In a stand mixer bowl attached with a dough hook, combine flour, warm water, baking powder, sea salt and olive oil.
- Knead until the dough comes together into a smooth ball, about 3-5 minutes.
- Cover the dough and let it rest for 15-20 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 5 equal portions, about 75g each.
- Line a piece of parchment paper on your workstation.
- Roll the dough out onto the parchment paper with a rolling pin into a round, circular shape. (It's OK if it's not perfect).
- Let the rolled out dough rest for 5 minutes.
- Heat up a dry frying pan over medium heat.
- Re-roll the dough thinly to stretch to 7-8" in diameter.
- Transfer the parchment and place it dough-side down onto the frying pan. Peel off the parchment and let it cook for 1 minute, until puffed up.
- Flip the dough with a spatula or pair of tongs and let it cook for another 30 seconds.
- Remove the tortilla and place onto a wire rack with a clean kitchen towel (so that they remain soft).
- Repeat with the remainder.
Notes
- This recipe yields five 6-inch tortillas, ideal for individual servings or small meals.
- Resting times in the recipe help improve dough elasticity for easier rolling.
- Cook tortillas briefly on each side until puffed and lightly browned for best texture.
- Store cooked tortillas wrapped in a towel to maintain softness while serving.
