How to Cook Perfect Rice in the Instant Pot

This technique for cooking basmati rice in the Instant Pot ensures fluffy, separated grains with a tender texture. Using equal parts rice and water, along with a bit of olive oil or butter and salt, the rice cooks under pressure, which helps retain moisture and shape. The recipe includes a resting step that lets steam finish the cooking, providing consistent results without sticking or clumping.

Description

How to Cook Perfect Rice in the Instant Pot uses 2 cups each of basmati rice and water, enhanced slightly with olive oil and salt. First, thoroughly rinsing the rice removes excess starch, which prevents clumping. Pressure cooking at high pressure for 5 minutes followed by 10 minutes of natural pressure release allows the rice to cook evenly without drying out. Covering the pot with foil and using a trivet keeps the rice container raised, ensuring even heat distribution.

The final fluffing step separates the grains, resulting in a light, airy texture that complements many dishes. This method is particularly useful for hands-off cooking, delivering reliable rice without constant monitoring.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 2 cups water or broth
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Tools:

  • trivet
  • Insert Pan

Instructions

  1. Rinse and drain the rice well.
  2. Add about 2 cups of water to the inner pot of the pressure cooker.
  3. Add the rice, salt and the two cups of water, oil or butter, to an Instant Pot safe dish/pot. Stir to combine.
  4. Add a long legged trivet to the Instant Pot. Add the pot with the rice onto the trivet. Cover with aluminum foil and pinch a few times with a fork. If using the same pot that I did, it comes with a steamer lid.
  5. Cook:
  6. Close lid and pressure cook at High Pressure for 5 minutes + 10 minutes Natural Release. Turn off the heat. Release the remaining pressure. Open the lid.
  7. Remove the pot with the rice, let it rest covered for 5-10 minutes.
  8. Before serving, fluff the rice with a fork.
