How to Make Homemade Nutella

This Homemade Nutella recipe creates a creamy, rich hazelnut spread by roasting and blending hazelnuts with coconut oil, coconut sugar, raw cacao powder, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. The resulting spread balances nutty depth with chocolatey sweetness, making it a versatile treat for spreading or incorporating into desserts.

Description

Raw hazelnuts are first roasted until their skins crack and darken, which intensifies their flavor and makes skin removal easier. After cooling, the hazelnuts are rubbed to remove the skins before blending them into a smooth butter. Coconut oil is then incorporated to enhance creaminess and texture. The mixture is sweetened with coconut sugar and flavored with raw cacao powder and vanilla extract, producing a spread that echoes the taste of store-bought Nutella but with customizable ingredients and freshness.

This homemade version can be enjoyed immediately or stored to allow it to firm slightly. It works well on toast, pancakes, or used in baking to add a chocolaty nut flavor. Adjusting the sugar or cacao can tailor the sweetness and cocoa intensity to preference.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups hazelnuts raw
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil or hazelnut oil
  • 2/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/3 cup raw cacao powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350F. Then, place the hazelnuts on a sheet pan and spread them out. Roast for 10-12 minutes, or until the skins become dark and cracked.
  2. Let the hazelnuts cool to the touch, then transfer them to a kitchen towel and rub them until the majority of the skins have been removed.
  3. Place the hazelnuts into a food processor and blend for 5-6 minutes, or until you have a creamy hazelnut butter. Add the oil and blend for another minute.
  4. Add the sugar, cacao and vanilla and blend until fully combined. If you can powder the coconut sugar in a spice grinder before combining, even better.
  5. Pour the nutella into a storage container (where it will firm up slightly as it cools) or enjoy immediately.
