Instant Pot Dulce de Leche
Description
Instant Pot Dulce de Leche is made by placing clean, unlabeled cans of sweetened condensed milk into the Instant Pot submerged in water. The cans are pressure cooked for different times to achieve light, medium, or dark dulce de leche. After cooking, the pressure is naturally released, and the cans must cool completely before opening to prevent splattering sugar and injury.
The caramelized milk develops a smooth, thick consistency and rich caramel flavor, suitable for spreading on cakes, desserts, or eating directly. The recipe cautions that cans may expand or warp during cooking, which is normal and does not affect the product.
Unopened cans can be stored in the pantry for months, while opened dulce de leche should be refrigerated in an airtight container and consumed within 5-7 days. Planning to open the cans the day after cooking is recommended for safety.
Ingredients
- 2x sweetened condensed milk 14 ounce cans
Instructions
- Remove the paper label from the cans and discard.
- Wash the cans well, scrubbing all the glue completely—you can also carefully scrub the glue off with a knife. (This is very important because the glue could stop up the valve in the Instant Pot.)
- Place the clean cans into the Instant Pot. Cover with water, close and seal.
- Pressure cook 5-10 minutes for a light, pourable dulce de leche. Pressure cook 20 minutes for medium dulce de leche. Pressure cook 30 minutes for dark, thich dulce de leche.
- Let the pressure naturally release. (This should take about 40-45 minutes).
- Safely open the pot, and with gloves or tongs remove the cans from the pot.
- Let the cans cool completely before opening. Since they were just under high pressure, the contents could explode if you open the can while it's still hot, and you could get seriously injured.
- Use it on cakes and desserts as desired.
Bom Apetite!!
Notes
- Ensure the cans are fully cooled before opening to prevent hot contents from exploding and causing injury.
- Cooking times vary to produce light, medium, or dark dulce de leche; choose based on intended use.
- Cans may expand or warp during cooking; this is normal and does not affect the dulce de leche inside.
- Unopened cans can be stored in the pantry for months; after opening, keep dulce de leche refrigerated and use within 5-7 days.
- Plan to open the cans at least a day after cooking for safety.
