Jessica's Dorito Taco Salad with Creamy Taco Dressing
Description
Jessica's Dorito Taco Salad with Creamy Taco Dressing is built around seasoned ground beef cooked with diced onion, garlic, and taco seasoning, layered over chopped lettuce varieties such as romaine or iceberg. The salad blends fresh vegetables like cherry tomatoes and sliced green onions with shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese. Crunchy Doritos nacho cheese flavored tortilla chips are included for texture and dipping. The creamy taco dressing adds a smooth, tangy element that ties the components together.
The flavor profile features savory and spiced meat balanced by crisp and juicy salad elements. The layering or tossing approach accommodates different serving methods, and optional add-ins like pickled red onions, sour cream, taco sauce, avocado, black beans, cilantro, and lime wedges offer further personalization and contrast. This salad’s flexibility makes it suited for casual gatherings where individual preferences can be met.
Its presentation can range from fully tossed to neatly layered, or laid out buffet style with components separated for self-assembly. The dish serves as a main salad or side and benefits from adding optional toppings at serving time to keep components like chips from sogging. This makes it practical for entertaining or meal prep days where some ingredients can be prepared in advance.
Offer salad ingredients and optional toppings separately to preserve chip crunch and allow guests to customize their plates.Prepare the seasoned meat mixture up to a day before to speed assembly on serving day.Include fresh lime wedges and cilantro to brighten and finish the salad just before eating.
Ingredients
for the salad:
- 1 lb. ground beef turkey, or chicken
- onion diced, half of a small
- 2 garlic minced, large cloves
- 1 taco seasoning portioned for 1 lb. of ground meat - here's our favorite store-bought seasoning mix, package
- 2 to 3 romaine lettuce chopped into bite-size pieces, or 1 to 2 heads of iceberg lettuce
- 4 green onions sliced
- 3 c. cherry tomato halved; or Roma tomatoes, chopped
- 2 to 3 c. cheddar cheese or Mexican blend cheese, shredded
- tortilla chips for scooping up the salad and/or for crushing over the salad, Doritos nacho cheese flavored
for the optional dressings and sides:
- my favorite Easy Creamy Taco Salad Dressing
- red onion pickled
- taco sauce
- sour cream
- avocado or guacamole; fresh slices
- black beans rinsed and drained
- cilantro chopped
- lime cut into wedges, for squeezing over the top, fresh
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium to medium-high heat, brown the ground meat and onion. When meat is nearly halfway browned, add the garlic. Once meat is browned and onion is softened, remove any excess fat from the pan. Then sprinkle taco seasoning over the mixture, stir in 1/3 cup of water, and let mixture simmer over medium heat until water is dissolved. Remove pan from heat. This can be prepared a day in advance and refrigerated until ready to serve - just warm it up again when creating the salad
- to serve the salad: From the options listed below, choose how you'd like to serve the salad. And then choose your ingredients. If there are ingredients that are not popular with some of the people at your table, simply offer those items on the side. You can make every single ingredient optional! My favorite dressing for this taco salad is this Easy, Creamy Taco Salad Dressing. My sister Jessica offers bottles of Thousand Island, spicy ranch, and/or zesty French dressings, for people to drizzle onto their salads as they wish.
Notes
- Customize the salad by omitting or adding ingredients based on your preferences or dietary needs.
- To avoid soggy tortilla chips, wait to crush or add them until just before serving.
- Serve ingredients buffet style for guests to assemble their own salads, which can enhance variety and enjoyment.
- Make the seasoned meat mixture a day ahead and store refrigerated, reheating before assembling if preferred.
