Korean Beef

This Korean Beef recipe features ground lean beef simmered in a savory mix of soy sauce, maple syrup, garlic, and ginger, accented with sesame oil and red pepper flakes. The balance of sweet and umami flavors, combined with the tender, slightly caramelized beef and a touch of green onion, creates a versatile dish. It can be served over brown rice, in lettuce cups, or simply on its own, making it a practical choice for a flavorful meal.

Description

The Korean Beef recipe uses lean ground beef browned and drained to reduce excess fat before simmering in a sauce made from soy sauce and maple syrup, which adds sweetness and depth. Minced garlic and freshly grated ginger bring aromatic notes, while red pepper flakes contribute mild heat. Sesame oil enriches the flavor with a subtle nuttiness. Green onions sprinkled at the end introduce freshness and mild sharpness.

Cooking involves simmering the beef with the sauce until the liquid reduces slightly, resulting in a tender, saucy mix that clings to the meat. The option to add splash of beef broth helps maintain desired moisture without diluting flavor.

This Korean Beef is adaptable for serving: over brown rice for a balanced meal, wrapped in lettuce cups for a low-carb option, or enjoyed solo as a protein-packed dish. Its straightforward method and approachable ingredients support easy preparation and convenient serving choices.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1.25 lbs ground beef lean
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 3 small cloves garlic finely minced
  • 1 inch ginger fresh, grated
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 2 green onions finely chopped
  • beef broth as needed

Instructions

  1. Preheat large skillet over medium-high heat. Add in beef and break apart as it browns with a wooden spoon. Once the beef is completely cooked, pour into a colander, and drain any excess fat off of the meat. Place meat back into the pan.
  2. Reduce heat to medium and add in soy sauce, maple syrup, minced garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes and sesame oil. Cook about five minutes or until the soy sauce reduced slightly. Taste and adjust seasonings with salt and pepper. If meat mixture is getting dry, splash in some beef broth as needed or desired. Stir in green onion.
  3. Serve over brown right, in lettuce cups, or on its own.
