Korean Watermelon Punch (Subak Hwachae)

Korean Watermelon Punch, or Subak Hwachae, is a refreshing fruit punch combining cubed or balled seedless watermelon with a creamy, fizzy mixture of milk, sweetened condensed milk, and lemon-lime soda. The punch offers a light sweetness, gentle creaminess, and sparkling texture, often garnished with fresh blueberries and adaptable with other fruits for variety.

Description

The Korean Watermelon Punch features a base of fresh watermelon pieces that provide juicy sweetness and hydration. A blend of milk and sweetened condensed milk creates a smooth, creamy layer that balances the fruit’s natural flavors, while lemon-lime soda adds effervescence and a mild citrus tang. Optionally, fresh blueberries serve as a fruity garnish, contributing a pop of color and subtle tartness.

The preparation involves combining the milk and condensed milk with soda, then pouring the mixture over the watermelon, allowing the flavors to mingle. The drink is served chilled and can be ladled into individual bowls or cups. It suits warm weather or festive occasions where a cooling fruit beverage is desired.

This punch can be chilled for a couple of hours before serving and should be consumed within 24 hours for best freshness. Adding other melons or pineapples to the punch is a flexible way to adapt its flavor profile and texture according to preference.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/4 watermelon balled or cubed, seedless
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 1/2 cup lemon-lime soda chilled
  • 2-4 tbsp sweetened condensed milk or honey or sugar
  • 1 cup blueberries optional, to garnish

Instructions

  1. Place watermelon pieces (and its juice) in a large serving bowl.
  2. Mix milk and condensed milk in another bowl and add soda; stir. Pour the punch mixture over watermelon. Garnish with blueberries if using.
  3. To serve, ladle watermelon punch into a small individual serving bowl. Serve immediately or chill up to 2 hours. Leftover punch can be stored in the refrigerator up to 24 hours.
  4. Note: If you’re serving this hwachae outdoors on hot days, place the punch bowl on a bed of ice to keep it chilled. If you’d like, you can add a few ice cubes into the punch. Just be aware that as the ice melts, it may dilute the flavors—though some people enjoy the lighter taste it creates.
