Papaya Milk (Taiwanese drink)
Description
Papaya Milk blends small cubes of ripe papaya with milk—commonly full-cream or UHT—and optionally sweetened with honey for extra sweetness, depending on the ripeness of the fruit. The papaya adds a tropical fragrance and smooth texture, while the milk provides creaminess and body. The quantity of papaya used can be adjusted from about one cup to several, affecting the flavor concentration and frothiness.
The papaya cubes can be fresh or frozen. Using frozen papaya softens the fruit and can slightly mute the flavor, requiring more papaya to achieve preferred taste intensity. Blending until frothy produces a smooth and creamy drink with subtle thickness, offering balance between the milk and fruit flavors.
This beverage is traditionally consumed immediately after preparation since it does not keep well—delayed consumption can result in bitterness and spoilage. Drinking right after blending ensures the best flavor profile and texture. Variations in milk type, including dairy-free options, are possible depending on dietary preference.
Ingredients
- 1 papaya Cut into small cubes. You can freeze extra to make papaya milk in future- the recipe works well with frozen fruit. Scroll down past the recipe card if you want to find out about the traditional benefits of papaya milk, medium, very ripe, or 1-4 cups depending on flavour concentration
- 1 Cup milk I like full-cream. Feel free to use UHT milk. See the recipe post for dairy-free substitutes if vegan or allergic to dairy.
- honey Optional- you will need it if your papaya isn't very ripe. I don't recommend sugar as it's hard to mix into a cold drink, or xantham gum or condensed milk
Instructions
- Cup the papaya into small cubes
- Add to the blender with the milk.
- Whizz it till it's at the desired frothiness- for a thicker, fuller flavoured drink, add more papaya.
- Taste- if too bland, add a bit of honey, sugar or condensed milk.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- Consume papaya milk immediately after blending to avoid bitterness and spoilage.
- Adjust the amount of papaya cubes to modify flavor intensity; frozen fruit can be used but may require more papaya for stronger taste.
- Use full-cream or UHT milk, or suitable dairy-free substitutes as desired.
