Quick Poppy Seed Rolls
Description
Quick Poppy Seed Rolls start with a yeast-leavened dough made from milk, yeast, margarine, oil, sugar, salt, and flour. After kneading until elastic and non-sticky, the dough is rolled out very thin and brushed with egg to enable the poppy seed filling to stick evenly. The filling consists of poppy seeds spread as a thin layer on the dough. The dough is then rolled up along the shorter side into a long string and sliced into pieces about 2 inches wide. These pieces are arranged on a baking sheet, spaced apart, brushed again with egg wash, and baked at 300 °F for 30 to 45 minutes until they develop a golden brown crust.
The rolls combine a tender crumb from the enriched dough with the distinct nutty, slightly textured poppy seed filling. Baking at a lower temperature for a longer period helps the rolls cook evenly without drying out.
These rolls are suited for enjoying fresh as a breakfast pastry or alongside tea or coffee. Their dense filling makes them satisfying for a snack or light treat.
