Quick Poppy Seed Rolls

Quick Poppy Seed Rolls feature a soft, elastic dough enriched with margarine and oil, rolled thin and generously filled with poppy seeds. The dough is brushed with egg wash, helping the poppy seed filling adhere well before baking at a moderate temperature until golden. This recipe yields tender rolls with a slightly sweet, nutty poppy seed flavor, ideal for breakfast or snack times. The long rolling and cutting into pieces give them a distinctive shape and texture.

Description

Quick Poppy Seed Rolls start with a yeast-leavened dough made from milk, yeast, margarine, oil, sugar, salt, and flour. After kneading until elastic and non-sticky, the dough is rolled out very thin and brushed with egg to enable the poppy seed filling to stick evenly. The filling consists of poppy seeds spread as a thin layer on the dough. The dough is then rolled up along the shorter side into a long string and sliced into pieces about 2 inches wide. These pieces are arranged on a baking sheet, spaced apart, brushed again with egg wash, and baked at 300 °F for 30 to 45 minutes until they develop a golden brown crust.

The rolls combine a tender crumb from the enriched dough with the distinct nutty, slightly textured poppy seed filling. Baking at a lower temperature for a longer period helps the rolls cook evenly without drying out.

These rolls are suited for enjoying fresh as a breakfast pastry or alongside tea or coffee. Their dense filling makes them satisfying for a snack or light treat.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp yeast
  • 1/4 cup neutral cooking oil avocado or canola, generic cooking oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp margarine
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 7 1/2 cup flour (depending on the brand, you may need more or less)
  • 1 egg
  • 16 oz poppy seed filling

Instructions

  1. Combine lukewarm milk with yeast and sugar. Let yeast dissolve for 5 minutes. Add salt, melted margarine and oil. Using a dough hook, mix in flour in small portion.
  2. Knead the dough for about 15 minutes, until it’s elastic and not sticky.
  3. Dust your counter with flour and roll out the dough with a rolling pin to very thin rectangle. Brush it with whisked egg, this makes poppy seed stick to the dough. Spread even thin layer of poppy seeds.
  4. Roll up the shorter side, making it into a long string. Flour knife and cut them into 2 inch pieces.
  5. Place them on baking sheet covered with parchment paper, leaving about an inch of space in between each one. Repeat until you run out of dough.
  6. Preheat the oven to 300 °F. Brush tops of piroshky with wisked eggs. Bake for 30-45 minutes, until golden brown.
