Roasted Strawberry Crumble with Cointreau
Description
The Roasted Strawberry Crumble with Cointreau begins by coating fresh strawberries with sugar and orange-flavored liqueur, which enhances the fruitiness as it roasts. A crumbly topping made from oats, all-purpose flour, sugar, melted salted butter, and vanilla is distributed evenly over the berries. Baking at 180°C (350°F) for 30 to 35 minutes develops a browned, crisp top while the strawberry juices bubble up, creating a moist, tender filling beneath.
The crumble combines crisp and soft textures—the oats and flour provide a slightly chewy, crumbly crust contrasting with the juicy, broken-down strawberries infused with citrus notes from the Cointreau. This contrast keeps the dessert interesting with every bite.
Serve the crumble hot or warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream to complement the tart sweetness. Leftovers can be enjoyed the next day, though the topping will absorb some juices and soften. The dessert remains flavorful even as the texture mellows.
For variations, different orange liqueurs like Triple Sec or Grand Marnier can be substituted, or orange juice can replace alcohol entirely. Ripeness of strawberries greatly affects the sauce's juiciness and flavor intensity, so selecting ripe, juicy berries is recommended for best results.
Ingredients
Strawberry filling
- 750 g strawberry ripe, fresh
- 2 tablespoon sugar
- 1½ tablespoon Cointreau liqueur can substitute orange juice for alcohol free
Crumble topping
- 1 cup rolled oats 90g
- 1 cup all-purpose flour 150g, also called plain flour
- ½ cup sugar 110g
- 120 g butter melted, salted
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180c / 350f.
- Place plain flour, sugar and rolled oats into a bowl and mix lightly to combine.
- Add melted butter and vanilla, mixing well to combine - the mixture should look "crumbly". Then set this crumble mixture aside.
- Cut the green tops off the strawberries. Leave smaller ones whole, cut any large ones in half.
- Place strawberries into a baking dish and sprinkle over sugar, then sprinkle over Cointreau liqueur and give everything a little mix around.
- Using your fingers, place clumps of the crumble topping mixture over the top of the strawberries then bake for 30-35 mins, or until the crumble topping has browned and juice is bubbling up around the edges of the crumble.
- Serve hot, topped with ice cream if you like.
Notes
- Use ripe, juicy strawberries for a flavorful, saucier filling.
- Substitute Cointreau with other orange-flavored liqueurs or orange juice to avoid alcohol.
- Bake until the topping is brown and juices bubble up, signaling doneness.
- Leftover crumble can be refrigerated and still enjoyed, though the topping may soften as it soaks in the juices.
