Rugelach Cookies

Rugelach Cookies are small crescent-shaped pastries with a tender, flaky dough made from butter and cream cheese. Each cookie is rolled with a sweet filling of brown sugar, cinnamon, chopped walnuts and pecans, and optionally raisins or currants, complemented by a layer of fruit preserves. The cookies are brushed with an egg and cream wash, sprinkled with coarse sugar, then baked until lightly browned. They have a rich, buttery taste with a crisp exterior and a sweet, nutty interior.

Description

The dough combines softened butter, cream cheese, vanilla extract, sugar, flour, and salt, mixed until just combined, to create a rich and tender base. After chilling, the dough is rolled into thin circles and spread evenly with raspberry or apricot preserves. A filling made of brown sugar, granulated sugar, finely chopped walnuts, pecans, cinnamon, and optional raisins or currants is sprinkled over the preserves. The dough is then cut into 12 wedges and rolled from the wide edge to form crescent shapes.

To finish, cookies are brushed with a mixture of beaten egg and heavy cream, then sprinkled with coarse sugar to add sparkle and crunch. After chilling, they are baked at 350°F until lightly browned, producing a lightly crisp and flaky pastry with a balanced sweetness and nutty filling. These cookies offer a classic rich texture and flavor that pairs well with tea or coffee.
