Stovetop BBQ Chicken Recipe

This Stovetop BBQ Chicken recipe seasons chicken thighs with a blend of spices before pan-cooking and finishing by simmering in barbecue sauce. The method yields tender, browned chicken coated in a thick, smoky sauce. Instructions also cover adapting the recipe for boneless chicken breasts using added liquid to achieve thorough cooking and sauce thickening.

Description

The recipe starts by seasoning chicken thighs with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper to build a smoky and savory base flavor profile. The chicken is then browned in a pan over medium-high heat to develop a seared crust. After most of the chicken cooks through, the heat lowers and barbecue sauce is added, allowing the chicken to simmer and the sauce to thicken while coating the pieces evenly.

This stovetop approach keeps the chicken moist and flavorful without needing outdoor grilling. The thickened barbecue sauce clings to the chicken, offering tangy and sweet notes depending on the sauce used. The recipe also advises how to prepare the dish using boneless chicken breasts by adding water or stock to ensure the breasts cook fully and the sauce thickens properly.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 chicken thigh see notes about how to make this with chicken breast, boneless
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons neutral cooking oil generic cooking oil
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce

Instructions

  1. Season the chicken with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the chicken thighs and cook until they start to brown, about 4 minutes. Flip them over and cook for another 4 minutes. They should be mostly cooked at this point. If your chicken thighs are very large, you may need to cook them for an additional minute or two.
  3. Lower the heat to medium then pour the BBQ sauce into the pan and mix the chicken around so that all the pieces are well coated. Continue to cook the chicken for 2 minutes more, or until the chicken is cooked and the BBQ sauce is thick.

Notes

  • When using boneless chicken breasts instead of thighs, add ½ cup water or chicken stock with the BBQ sauce and cook for 8-10 minutes until cooked through and sauce thickens.
