Ingredients
- ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
- ½ cup mirin or sake
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 4 cloves garlic crushed
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger grated
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
- Heat a saucepan on the stove over medium-high heat. Add the soy sauce, mirin, brown sugar, garlic and ginger to the pan, whisk to combine. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 4-5 minutes.
- In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch and water. Add this to the boiling sauce and whisk together. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 3-4 minutes.
- Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. The sauce will thicken as it sits and cools. If you want a thicker sauce, increase the amount of cornstarch and water both to 3 tablespoons.
Notes
- To make gluten-free teriyaki sauce, use tamari instead of soy sauce. Always check the label on the mirin to make sure it’s gluten free. The Mirsukan brand pictured above in the blog post is gluten free.
- This recipe can easily be doubled. Simply click the 2X button above. The ingredient amounts will automatically double to make a double batch of the sauce.
- Store the sauce in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container.
- For instructions on how to make a stir fry with the sauce, or how to use it as a marinade, refer to the blog post above.
