The Best Guacamole Recipe
Description
The Best Guacamole starts with perfectly ripe avocados, halved, pitted, and scooped out before mashing together with fresh lemon juice to prevent browning and add brightness. Into the mashed fruit go small diced tomatoes, onion, finely minced garlic, and jalapeño for subtle heat. Fresh cilantro and ground cumin introduce herbal and earthy notes while salt and black pepper are used to taste for seasoning.
This guacamole combines smooth creaminess with occasional chunks, offering textural contrast and a fresh, lightly spicy flavor profile. It is best prepared and served immediately to enjoy the freshness of ingredients, though it can be stored with lemon juice on top in an airtight container for up to three days to slow oxidation without freezing.
Tomatoes can be swapped with different varieties like Roma or cherry depending on preference, and the spice level can be increased by using a habanero pepper. Including or omitting tomatoes is optional based on taste. This guacamole is versatile for dips, spreads, or toppings.
For storing, spreading lemon juice directly on the surface and flattening the guacamole before sealing prevents browning. Avoid freezing to maintain texture and flavor.
Ingredients
- 4 avocado ripe
- lemon or about 3 tablespoons, juice of 1
- 2 vine ripe tomato seeded, small diced
- ½ yellow onion peeled, small diced, large
- 1 garlic finely minced clove
- 1 jalapeno pepper seeded and small diced
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro finely minced
- 1 teaspoon cumin ground
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Holding the avocado in one hand, use a chef knife in the other hand and press down into the avocado until you reach the seed in the center and roll it around the knife until the two cuts meet.
- Twist the avocado to separate it in half, and using your knife gently chop into the avocado seed while holding it with a towel underneath it with your other hand. Twist it and remove it.
- Scoop the avocado out away from the shell.
- Smash the avocado with lemon juice in a large bowl until smooth but still has a few small chunks.
- Add tomatoes, onions, garlic, jalapeños, lemon juice, cilantro, cumin, salt, and pepper.
- Fold everything together using a rubber spatula. Adjust any seasonings with more lemon juice, cumin, salt, or pepper.
Notes
- Prepare and serve guacamole immediately for best freshness and flavor.
- Store in an airtight container with lemon juice covering the surface to prevent browning, refrigeration up to 3 days.
- Tomato varieties such as Roma or cherry can be used based on availability.
- Increase spice level by substituting jalapeño with habanero pepper.
- Omitting tomatoes is optional according to preference.
- Do not freeze guacamole as it negatively affects texture.
