Turkey Pizza Recipe
Description
This Turkey Pizza uses a pizza dough allowed to rise for 18 hours or a store-bought dough option stretched into rounds. The oven is preheated to a high temperature around 500°F with a pizza stone or baking sheet to achieve a crisp bake. The pineapple salsa incorporates fresh diced pineapple, red onion, chopped cilantro, lime juice, and minced jalapeño for a lively flavor profile.
Shredded cooked turkey is tossed with half the barbecue sauce, then the pizza bases are spread with the remaining sauce before topping with turkey, torn mozzarella pieces, and a sprinkle of sea salt. Baking times vary between 9-14 minutes depending on whether a pizza stone or baking sheet is used. The pineapple salsa is added after baking to preserve its freshness and texture.
The recipe balances sweet and smoky barbecue turkey with the acidic freshness of the salsa, finished by melted mozzarella. Suggested dough preparation requires planning given long rising times but allows for excellent texture and flavor development. Alternatively, store-bought dough can be utilized for convenience.
Ingredients
- 2 pizza dough see notes, plural
- 1 ½ cups pineapple diced fresh
- ¼ cup red onion minced
- ¼ cup cilantro chopped
- lime juice from half lime
- ½ jalapeno pepper minced
- 1 ½ cups turkey shredded, cooked
- ¾ cup BBQ sauce divided
- 1 ball mozzarella cheese torn into pieces
Instructions
- Place your pizza stone (if using) into your oven on the middle rack and turn your oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, or as high as it will go. While your oven is preheating, mix the pineapple, red onion, cilantro, lime, and jalapeño pepper in a medium-sized bowl.
- Stretch each pizza dough to form a circle. Either place the pizza crust on an upside-down baking sheet or on your pizza peel if you're using a pizza stone.
- Mix the shredded turkey with ½ cup of your favorite BBQ sauce.
- Spread the remaining ¼ cup of BBQ sauce on top of the two pizzas - 2 tablespoons each. Top with the shredded turkey, mozzarella cheese, and a sprinkle of sea salt.
- Bake the pizzas, one at a time, in your oven for 12-14 minutes if you are using a baking sheet, or 9-10 minutes if you are using a pizza stone. When the turkey pizza comes out of the oven, sprinkle the pineapple salsa over the top.
Notes
- The suggested pizza dough takes 18 hours to rise; plan ahead or use store-bought dough as a substitute.
- Adding pineapple salsa after baking preserves its fresh texture and bright flavor.
