Turkey Sloppy Joes Recipe
Description
This Turkey Sloppy Joes Recipe sautés minced onion, garlic, and small diced red pepper before browning ground turkey. It then simmers in a flavorful sauce made from tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar to achieve a balance of sweet and tangy. Chicken stock or water is added to adjust the sauce’s consistency to ensure it coats the meat without being too runny.
The mixture is spooned over brioche buns, which are optionally toasted with butter or oil for added texture and richness. Melting pepper jack or cheddar cheese atop adds a creamy, slightly spicy finish to these hearty sandwiches.
This recipe serves four and provides a comforting, saucy sandwich option that uses lean ground turkey as a substitute for traditional beef sloppy joes.
Toasting the buns is recommended for a better textural contrast and flavor. Buns are buttered or oiled then heated cut side down in a pan for about 2-3 minutes until toasted.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion minced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- ½ medium red pepper diced small
- 1 lb ground turkey or ground chicken
- ½ cup tomato sauce
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce each
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- ½ cup chicken stock or water
For Serving
- 4 Brioche buns see notes
- ½ cup cheese we like pepper jack or cheddar, shredded
- chip on the side
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook for 3 minutes, until it's soft. Add the garlic and red pepper to the pan and let them cook for 2 minutes.
- Add the ground turkey to the pan and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until it is no longer pink, about 10 minutes.
- Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worchestershire sauce, dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar to the pot and let it cook for 5 minutes, until it becomes sweet-smelling. Stir the chicken stock or water into the pan and let it cook for another 5 minutes. You want it to be saucy but not soupy.
- Divide the sloppy joe meat between the buns and top with some pepper jack cheese.
Notes
- Toasting the buns enhances flavor and texture; butter or oil the cut sides and toast in a pan for 2-3 minutes.
- This recipe works equally well with ground chicken as a turkey substitute.
