Turmeric ginger cinnamon lemon honey tea
Description
Turmeric ginger cinnamon lemon honey tea is made by simmering fresh slices of turmeric and ginger with a cinnamon stick in water. The simmering process extracts the distinct flavors and vibrant color from these ingredients. Once brewed, fresh lemon juice is added along with honey for sweetness. The resulting tea features an earthy, spicy base from turmeric and ginger, complemented by warm cinnamon and brightened by lemon.
This tea offers a comforting and flavorful beverage that can be served hot to warm up during cooler days or chilled for refreshment in warmer weather. Its combination of spices lends a fragrant and mildly spicy character, while the lemon and honey balance the flavors with acidity and sweetness.
Peeling turmeric and ginger with the back of a spoon minimizes waste. For stronger ginger flavor, grated ginger can be used. The recipe allows for variations, such as adding extra spices like black pepper or cayenne for heat or blending half the tea with milk to create a golden milk variant.
Ingredients
- 10 lices Turmeric peeled and sliced. Substitute: turmeric powder
- 6-10 lices ginger peeled and sliced. Substitute: dried ginger powder
- 1 cinnamon Substitute: cinnamon powder
- 1 lemon Substitute: lime juice, squeeze
- 6 Cups water
- honey Ideally Manuka honey for the health benefits. Substitute: white or brown sugar, to taste
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients to a pot, except the honey and lemon juice. Bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer.
- After 10 minutes, taste and see if it's strong enough for you. If not, keep simmering. (I usually simmer for anything between 10-30 minutes depending on how much time I have!)
- Once the flavor and color are to your liking, switch off the fire then pour in the lemon juice.
- Add the honey to sweeten to taste.
- Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Peeling turmeric and ginger with the back of a spoon minimizes waste and is efficient.
- Use grated ginger for a stronger ginger flavor in the tea.
- True cinnamon is preferable over cassia labeled cinnamon to get the full flavor.
- The tea can be enjoyed hot or chilled as iced tea depending on preference and season.
- For a golden milk variation, mix the brewed tea with milk or almond milk starting with equal parts and adjust to taste, but avoid coconut milk as it can impart a curry-like flavor.
- Add a pinch of black pepper, cayenne, clove, or nutmeg to increase spiciness if desired.
