Chai Masala Powder

Chai Masala Powder is a fragrant blend of green cardamom, cloves, black peppercorns, fennel seed, cassia cinnamon, ground ginger, black cardamom, and grated nutmeg. This coarse spice mix is designed to flavor Indian masala chai by adding warmth and aromatic depth. It is prepared by blending all ingredients into a powder and is best used fresh to maximize its bold, spicy notes in tea.

Description

The recipe for Chai Masala Powder calls for a combination of green cardamom, cloves, black peppercorns, fennel seed, cassia cinnamon, ground ginger, black cardamom, and freshly grated nutmeg. These spices are blended into a coarse powder, which serves as a foundational mix for traditional Indian masala chai. The presence of both green and black cardamom along with warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg creates a complex and aromatic profile.

This spice blend is mixed and stored in an airtight container for up to one month, preserving its freshness. The recipe suggests using about 1/4 teaspoon of this powder per cup of masala chai, imparting a balanced yet robust flavor to the tea.

Chai masala powder is used primarily as a tea flavoring ingredient; it brings a warm, spiced quality to hot beverages and could also inspire other culinary uses where a warm spice mix is appropriate.

Given the delicate nature of ground spices losing potency over time, this recipe advises against preparing large quantities at once to keep the masala fresh and flavorful for daily use.
