Indian Onion Salad (Laccha Pyaaz)
Description
The Indian Onion Salad, known as Laccha Pyaaz, starts with thinly sliced red onions that provide a crunchy texture. These are combined with spices—roasted cumin powder, chaat masala, and red chili powder—to layer earthy, tangy, and mildly spicy flavors. Finely diced green chili peppers introduce heat, while chopped cilantro and optional mint leaves contribute herbal freshness.
Lime juice adds acidity that brightens the palate and balances the pungency of the onions. The salad is best served immediately to maintain its crispness since the salt causes the onions to release water and soften if left too long.
This salad acts as a palate cleanser or accompaniment to rich Indian dishes, providing a sharp, textured contrast to heavier curries or grilled foods.
Ingredients
- 1 red onion medium
- 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder I used Kashmiri chili powder, adjust to taste, Mirchi powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder roasted
- 1/2 teaspoon chaat masala
- 1 green chili pepper finely diced, adjust to taste
- 2 tablespoon cilantro finely chopped, leaves
- 2 tablespoon mint optional, finely chopped, leaves, Pudhina
- 2 tablespoon lime juice
- 1/4 teaspoon salt adjust to taste
Instructions
- Peel the onion. Slice it into thin rings or discs using a sharp knife.
- Place the onions in a mixing bowl. Separate the rings with your hands.
- (optional) Soak the onion rings in water for 15 minutes to reduce the pungent taste and smell. Then discard the water.
- Add red chilli powder, cumin powder, chaat masala, finely chopped green chilli, salt and lime juice.
- Add finely chopped cilantro leaves or mint leaves or both.
- Toss everything until well combined. You can also use your hands to mix the onions with the spices.
- Check the seasoning and adjust if required. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Use fresh, firm onions and a sharp knife to get clean thin slices for the best texture.
- Adjust spice levels by omitting green chilies if preferred milder.
- Lime juice can be substituted with vinegar for a different tart note.
- Serve the salad right after mixing to prevent the onions from becoming soggy.
