Description
This Matcha Affogato uses sifted ceremonial grade matcha powder whisked with hot water cooled to about 80°C to produce a pourable but thick green tea mixture. This is poured over two scoops of vanilla or matcha ice cream, blending the traditional bitter and umami notes of matcha with the creamy sweetness of the ice cream.
The gentle heat and concentration of the matcha creates a warm layer over the cold ice cream that softens slightly while retaining distinct flavors. The ice cream provides a creamy texture contrast and slight sweetness to balance matcha's grassy bitterness.
Matcha Affogato is a refreshing treat to enjoy immediately after preparation. It requires minimal ingredients and offers an elegant way to enjoy matcha beyond the typical tea ceremony or lattes.
Ingredients
- 2-3 tablespoon water cooled to 80°C/176°F, boiled, hot
- 2 coops vanilla ice cream or matcha ice cream
- 1 ½ teaspoon matcha sifted, ceremonial
Instructions
- Boil water and let it cool to 80°C/176°F.
- Add the sifted matcha powder to a small bowl and carefully pour the water over it. (Add a little water at a time so you can control how thick you want the koicha).
- Whisk the mixture with a bamboo chasen until you obtain a pourable, but thick matcha.
- Add scoops of ice cream into a serving vessel.
- Pour the matcha (koicha) over top of the ice cream and serve immediately.
