Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium sized yellow onion about 1 cup diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 (28 ounce) can peeled whole tomatoes
  • 1 prig fresh basil
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Add olive oil to a 12-inch high-sided skillet and set over medium-high heat.
  2. When the oil is hot, add your onion and saute just until the onions start to soften and turn translucent in color, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the garlic and crushed red pepper flakes and saute until the garlic is fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the tomato paste.
  4. Pour in the tomatoes, sprig of basil, Italian seasoning, and kosher salt. Gently stir to combine.
  5. Simmer for 20 minutes, gently breaking up the tomatoes as they cook.
  6. After 20 minutes the sauce should be thickened, remove the sprig of basil and use as desired. S
  7. Store cooled sauce in a plastic container or glass jar in the refrigerator for up 3-4 days.
